... behind the scenes
On reflection

On September 4th 1809 Juliusz Słowacki was born. 2009 is the year of the 200th anniversary of his birth. This occurrence stimulated me to adapt and direct one of his most famed dramas: Balladyna. Balladyna has not been yet translated into a film version though there are three records with music inspired by the drama.

I began to collect funds for the film in 2003. The major patron of the film was the European Union co-financing the film production within Media programme resources.

The film was made in such a way that audiences worldwide could easily comprehend the message conveyed in the drama by Słowacki. The film is a contemporary version of the drama as we find ourselves in the present day rather than set in the distant past. For this reason the drama is much more easily assimilated, though the story itself has not been altered.

Słowacki was not only an outstanding poet with      a lute and a pen –according to the traditional image of him. He was also an excellent business manager. He even invested in shares of French railway; the profits together with an extraordinary talent allowed his extravagancy in such creative freedom.
